Allen Lau, CEO and co-founder of Wattpad, the world’s largest community of readers and writers, is in Manila this week to attend the 36th Annual Manila International Book Fair (MIBF). Since it’s launch in 2006, Wattpad has become a top entertainment destination in the Philippines with over five million Filipinos using Wattpad every month.

“In the Philippines, Wattpad is synonymous with entertainment,” said Allen Lau. “Wattpad stories have captured the hearts of Filipinos and have spread beyond the app. Today many of the most popular books, movies, and primetime television shows in the Philippines are based on Wattpad stories. When entertainment reflects a variety of interests and experiences, it can spread like wildfire – we see this happen every day on and off Wattpad.”

The Philippines is home to the second largest Wattpad community in the world. One out of every four Filipinos with Internet access has joined Wattpad. Wattpad stories are in high demand in the country, and more than 500 stories have been traditionally published. Many blockbuster movies like She’s Dating the Gangster starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, and Diary ngPanget starring Nadine Lustre and James Reid were adapted from Wattpad stories. Wattpad Presents, the weekly series on the TV5 Network, brings 40 popular stories to life on the small screen and has reached approximately one million viewers across the country.
