New Study Shows Electric Vehicles May Outlast Gas Cars: VinFast Owners Have Extra Confidence

VinFast electric vehicles are showing promising durability, offering Filipino drivers a reliable and sustainable alternative to traditional gasoline cars.

MANILA – A new study from Vietnam suggests that electric vehicles (EVs) could be more durable than traditional gasoline cars, offering reassurance to Filipino drivers exploring electric mobility. For early adopters, especially VinFast owners, the research confirms that EVs can hold their value and performance over time, even under real-world driving conditions.

With fuel prices fluctuating and more Filipinos considering the long-term costs of car ownership, questions about EV durability have become increasingly important. The study, conducted by Hanoi University of Science and Technology and presented at the International Conference on Manufacturing and Production Technology in Malaysia, analyzed performance and maintenance data from nearly 5,700 vehicles in Vietnam between 2020 and 2024.

EV Durability Outshines Gasoline Cars

The dataset included 1,047 VinFast electric vehicles and 4,620 gasoline cars from brands including VinFast’s earlier combustion models, Hyundai, and Chevrolet. Researchers used three approaches—statistical reliability modeling, real-world service records, and mechanical testing—to compare longevity and performance.

  • Statistical Modeling: Both EVs and gas cars performed similarly in early years. After 12 years, cumulative failure probability for gasoline vehicles exceeded 81%, while EVs remained around 63%. By year 15, gasoline cars approached 98% probability of failure versus 86% for electric vehicles.

  • Real-World Maintenance: After 40,000 km, EVs showed fewer faults than gasoline models. Between 80,000 and 125,000 km, EV fault rates ranged from 0.021–0.029 incidents per 1,000 km, compared with 0.025–0.034 for gas cars.

  • Mechanical Testing: During repeated downhill braking tests, gasoline vehicle brake discs rose from 36.8°C to 147.6°C, while EVs using regenerative braking showed only a slight increase, from 33.4°C to 38.4°C.

“Electric vehicles demonstrate durability both in theory and in real-world conditions. The findings provide a scientific, objective view of long-term reliability,” said Dr. Dam Hoang Phuc, Associate Professor of Automotive Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology and lead researcher.

Why This Matters for Filipino Drivers

As EV adoption slowly grows in the Philippines, studies like this help address one of the biggest concerns among prospective buyers: long-term reliability. Rising fuel costs have already driven interest in electric alternatives, and as more EV models enter the Philippine market and charging infrastructure expands, confidence in electric mobility is likely to increase.

VinFast Drivers Gain Extra Assurance

The study highlighted several advantages that contribute to EV durability:

  • Simpler Powertrain: EVs have fewer moving parts—no pistons, fuel pumps, or complex gear assemblies—reducing potential failure points.

  • Regenerative Braking: Converts kinetic energy into electricity, reducing wear on brakes and other components.

  • Better Weight Distribution: Battery packs lower in the chassis spread weight evenly, reducing stress on suspension components.

Importantly, the dataset included over 1,000 VinFast EVs operating in real-world conditions, offering a practical look at the performance of VinFast vehicles over tens of thousands of kilometers.

Beyond durability, VinFast offers programs tailored to Philippine buyers, including a battery subscription program that reduces upfront costs and a Residual Value Guarantee (RVG) that allows owners to sell back their vehicles at predetermined values.

EVs: Cleaner, Quieter, and More Reliable

With research like the Vietnamese study, electric vehicles are increasingly proven to be not just environmentally friendly, but also dependable for long-term ownership. For Filipinos considering the shift to EVs, the message is clear: modern electric cars, particularly VinFast models, are built to last.
