Leaders of the Electric Revolution gather at the 12th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit.

Edmund Araga, President of the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP), emphasized the summit’s role in promoting a transformative shift towards electric transportation. “This event aims to spark a movement and drive change towards a more sustainable future,” Araga said.

Government Support and Industry Progress

Ronnie Aperocho, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), emphasized the company’s efforts in electrifying its fleet and expanding charging infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector in driving the adoption of EVs.

Raphael Lotilla, Secretary of the Department of Energy, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the EV industry. He emphasized the role of government policies and incentives in creating a conducive environment for the growth of EVs. Lotilla also highlighted the potential of the Philippines to become a regional hub for EV manufacturing and assembly.

Key Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the positive strides made, the EV industry in the Philippines still faces several challenges. One of the primary concerns is the limited availability of charging infrastructure, which can hinder the adoption of EVs for long-distance travel. Addressing this issue will be crucial for the widespread adoption of EVs.

Another challenge is the relatively high cost of EVs compared to traditional vehicles. However, with advancements in technology and economies of scale, EV prices are expected to decrease over time, making them more accessible to a wider range of consumers.

On the other hand, the EV industry also presents numerous opportunities. The Philippines has the potential to become a regional hub for EV manufacturing and assembly, leveraging its skilled workforce and strategic location. Additionally, the country’s rich mineral resources can support the production of batteries and other components for EVs.

The Future of EVs in the Philippines

As Hon. Albert Garcia, Representative, Bataan 2nd District, House of Representatives, noted, “The shift to electric vehicles is a paradigm shift that can lead to a more sustainable future.” He emphasized the need for government support and private sector investment to drive the adoption of EVs.

Robert Borje, Vice Chairperson and Executive Director, Climate Change Commission, highlighted the importance of EVs in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach that includes investments in charging infrastructure, renewable energy, and public transportation.

Ceferino Rodolfo, Undersecretary for the Industry Development and Investment Promotions Group of the Department of Trade and Industry and Vice Chairman and Managing Head of the Board of Investments, emphasized the Philippines’ potential to become a major player in the global EV supply chain. He highlighted the government’s efforts to attract investments and develop the necessary infrastructure to support the industry’s growth.

Frederick Go, Special Assistant to the Philippines for Investment and Economic Affairs, emphasized the economic opportunities presented by the EV industry. He highlighted the potential for job creation, technology development, and enhanced competitiveness.

The 12th PEVS showcased the growing momentum of the EV industry in the Philippines. With strong government support, industry investment, and technological advancements, the country is well-positioned to capitalize on the global shift towards electric mobility. The future of EVs in the Philippines is promising, offering opportunities for sustainable development, economic growth, and reduced carbon emissions.
