TGR Philippine Cup returns to Clark as Toyota turns Race Weekend 2 into a real-world biofuel test

Race Weekend 2 to happen on July 9 to 11 at the Clark International Speedway

The TGR Philippine Cup heads back to Clark International Speedway in Mabalacat, Pampanga, from July 9 to 11 for Race Weekend 2, with Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) using the competition as a high-performance testing ground for low-carbon biofuels.

The second of four race weekends scheduled for the 2026 season transforms the circuit into what Toyota describes as a “rolling laboratory,” where race cars will run on biofuel blends under the extreme demands of competitive motorsports.

Since its launch in 2014, the TGR Philippine Cup has brought wheel-to-wheel racing closer to Filipino fans while serving as a platform to showcase Toyota’s performance and mobility technologies. The season opened in March at Riverpark, Cavite, drawing more than 6,000 spectators and introducing the new Tamaraw Racing Class, which features the locally built Tamaraw One-Make Race (OMR) vehicle.

This weekend, the spotlight shifts from a new race class to sustainable mobility.

Both the Vios OMR and Tamaraw OMR race cars will compete using a 5% coco-biodiesel blend (B5) and a 20% bioethanol blend (E20). By subjecting these fuels to the intense conditions of circuit racing, Toyota aims to evaluate their performance, efficiency, and reliability in environments where engines operate at their limits.

The initiative also reflects the company’s broader push toward fuel flexibility. Currently, three-quarters of Toyota and Lexus gasoline-powered models sold in the Philippines are already compatible with E20 fuel, while all Toyota diesel models can run on B5 biodiesel.

“Motorsports has always been a testbed for progress, and this season, TGR Philippines will take a step forward by actively exploring alternative fuels in competitive racing conditions,” said Elijah Marcial, TMP First Vice President for Vehicle Sales Operations.

“Testing biofuels in motorsports allows us to evaluate performance, efficiency and reliability in high-demand environments, so this will be a pivotal moment for the wider adoption of low-carbon biofuels in the Philippines.”

TMP Vice President for Government and Industry Affairs Elvin Luciano said the initiative supports Toyota’s long-term carbon reduction strategy by exploring multiple pathways toward cleaner mobility.

“As a company committed to reducing carbon emissions, we recognize that every activity must contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable future,” Luciano said.

“Alternative fuels help reduce dependency on non-renewables like petroleum, so using biofuel for our motorsports events aligns with our multi-pathway approach, which includes diversifying our energy sources to contribute to our broader goal of carbon neutrality.”

Race Weekend 2 opens its gates to the public on July 11, with free admission for spectators.
