Globe Telecom salutes Filipino workers on Labor Day

Globe Telecom salutes our fellow Filipinos who work tirelessly to keep businesses afloat and maintain jobs amid the challenges posed by the continuing pandemic.

Filipinos have once again shown their resilience by adapting to new ways of working so that they could provide for their families and loved ones.  Globe Telecom stays focused on providing initiatives, many of which are digital, to ensure that its customers, community partners and its own employees are able to live their best life even with the pandemic.

Globe Telecom has been at the forefront of cultivating a digital nation by supporting community programs that espouse digital skills learning and advocating the use of digital tools and connectivity so that Filipino workers like Elphie Lazaro can find ways to cope under this unique situation.

Lazaro, who is the Ground Operations Manager of beauty salon HairMNL Studio, is grateful for the advent of technology that has allowed the business to transition to mostly an e-commerce model since the pandemic started. This in turn, has helped keep the business afloat, thus, preserving her ability to make a living during this difficult period.

Lazaro, though, has had to stay in the company’s staff house in order to ensure the safety of the employees and customers. Fortunately, having a reliable Internet connection lets her stay in touch with her family.

As tough as it is to find work with the economic recession, the task is made tougher for differently-abled persons like Ritchell Anne de Loyola. A banker before she was diagnosed with lupus, de Loyola had to lean on her husband for her day-to-day needs. This changed when she became a beneficiary of Globe Telecom’s partnership with Virtualahan.

Virtualahan is a globally awarded virtual school for Persons With Disabilities to develop skills and mindset to become competitive employees and entrepreneurs using the equalizing power of technology. De Loyola is a graduate of Virtualahan and Globe Telecom’s skills training program. Through this, she was able to secure a job with Microsoft that enables her to work remotely.

“I never realized na magiging part ulit ako ng workforce. Napakalaking bagay yung connectivity kasi kung wala yun hindi po namin magagawa yung online training,” she added.

Prior to the pandemic, Ritchell was already working from home, and for her, the power of technology has been essential in enabling her to work again.

With a customer-first mindset, Globe equally gives importance to its employees, making sure they are protected and equipped to face challenges on the job. Another example is Alex Samson, the Network Infrastructure, Maintenance, and Fortification Head of Globe.

Samson is responsible for making sure Globe Telecom’s infrastructure is seamlessly running. He oversees maintenance of equipment, assessing vulnerabilities so his team can proactively address the issue. His team also handles the restoration and normalization of the network due to unforeseen events such as disasters or accidents.

However, changes in protocols due to the lockdown have made it challenging for his team to address issues onsite within a much faster timeline. For Samson, these are challenges and not setbacks.

Customer first, but Globe is also treating its people right. We make sure we do our job safely and sa loob ng proseso kasi mas lalo naming hindi magagampanan ito kung kami ay magkakasakit.

The company strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 8 which promotes sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, and UN SDG No. 9 which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.
