Every single young lady desires to be part of a contest like a beauty pageant. Their aspirations, goals, dreams and even their advocacies are kept in their hearts and minds. That doesn’t stop Maychell Refran, a single mother of 3 kids, who raised her family in San Pablo, Laguna.
The Mrs Laguna Universe beauty pageant paves way for mothers just like Maychell Refran to exhibit their beauty and talent, soft-hearted personalities and skills. Officially as candidate No. 5, Maychell is San Pablo City’s official candidate to this year’s pageant.
Maychell wants to give inspiration to rest of the women who are already married like her that there are a lot of things you can do even if you already have a family. This is part of her genuine advocacy that she will establish when she wins the crown.
MC as her close friends call her, has lived a live that’s full of challenges when she became a widow to husband Jeffrey who tragically passed away on November 2019. His early death caused a tragic hole in MC’s life as she has lived her life fully dependent on him as they were together as a couple when she was still young.
MC grew up not knowing her ancestral roots, from Manila to Marikina, she moved to San Pablo in her early adult life and started her family there with Jeffrey. From humble beginnings, the couple wanted to have a family, and despite the loss of her husband, in her heart she promised to Jeffrey that she will establish their 3 children on her own. She has been in this situation since then and has no signs of backing out as she strongly fights her way in providing the needs of her children.
Navigating through pandemic when everything was in a frozen state back in 2020, business was on a stand still but MC made sure that her 3 children went to school, fed them well and have secured a home for them. Despite this, MC also pursued her studies and was able to finish her studies recently with a bachelor’s degree early this year.
Maychell wants to tell the World that life isn’t over even when you are a single mom and she says that we should chase our dreams everyday. We should teach our kids the correct values of Filipino living, how to be simple, kind and loving to one another, and also to help the needy in whatever however small deeds that we can. Her advocacy is “Empowering solo mothers through education healing and opportunity”, as she walks her way to the crown, she believes she can be an instrument for other mothers to fulfill her dreams as well.

- empowering solo mothers through education, healing and opportunity. Being a solo mother is not a weakness. It is a calling that requires strength, courage and unwavering love. A woman becomes a mother, a father, and an emotional anchor for her children. Education is the first pillar of my advocacy. Accessible education, skills training and financial literacy programs that allow solo mothers to build their confidence and independence
- Healing – many single mothers carry silent pain, grief, abandonment, fear of broken families, emotions you usually hide just to stay strong for our children. Healing is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Through mental awareness support groups, and safe spaces for solo mothers.
- Opportunity – solo mothers deserve chances, fair employment, entrepreneurship support and platform for their voices that can be heard.
MC believes that these are the pillars that will also make every single mom strong and proud of herself and be able to have the self-esteem and courage to do business on her own, given the chance in life. We should also help uplift their moral and bring them to high spirits so they can raise their children correctly.
Maychell’s 3 kids Jef Matthew, Jef Michael and Jef Mikaela who is her love and inspiration that keeps her striving to do work everyday even she gets tired of doing day to day house chores. In the talent portion, Maychell performs a dance number with them on stage at the prelimination night. She also got the Darling of the Press, Valentine’s Event Winner – most glamorous lady in Red 2026; Preliminary night award – Sponsor’s choice award MODERU.
MC does community work in San Pablo during her free time. She volunteers and helps other women in various society groups and is also active in promoting cleanliness, orderliness and good health. One of her most active hobbies and also a business is collecting bags, travelling outside the Country, and spending weekends with her 3 children.
During this time, she has being going around the municipality, reaching out to children and meeting the people in the local government so she can speak out her mind and share her advocacies and get support from the people.
